Relocating to Westchester? We've got you covered.
Westchester’s proximity to the city and extensive rail, bus and road networks make your commute to work so easy, wherever in the county you find your dream home.
With commute times as fast as 30 minutes and frequent service, the MTA’s (Metropolitan Transit Authority) Metro-North train network is an extremely convenient commuting option. Three main commuter lines, the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven, fan out from Grand Central Station in New York City to cover Westchester county. Stations at towns such as Scarsdale, Hartsdale, Bronxville, White Plains, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, Rye, Irvington, Hastings and Dobbs Ferry and easy access to neighboring towns make the Metro-North a popular Westchester commuting option. Information on ticket pricing and seasonal tickets can be found at the Metro-North webpage.
Getting to the Station
Of course, your commute also includes getting to and from your home and the station. A range of options are available depending on the community you live in. Most offer commuter bus lines (see below) that stop at the train station; some have plentiful parking spaces with resident parking permits or long-term meter parking; and other communities rely on car-pooling, ride-shares and taxi’s. Information on station facilities and seasonal parking permits can be accessed through the Metro-North homepage, or the relevant community website and the Totally Westchester team are happy to share their extensive knowledge of each town or village’s “commuter culture.”
Commuter Bus
The Bee-Line is Westchester County’s bus line, providing a convenient transport option between communities, work, school, train stations and airports. A map of Bee-Line routes can be found here and schedules and more information here.
Car
An extensive network of major highways and county roads, make Westchester’s neighbors New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts easily accessible by car. Three Interstate Highways and five scenic parkways run the length of the county providing multiple route choices for accessing New York City in as little as 30 minutes.
With no fewer than eight Amtrak North-East routes stopping at stations in Westchester, accessing further flung destinations by rail couldn’t be easier. The Acela, Maple Leaf, Adirondack, NE Regional, Empire, Ethan Allen, Berkshire Flyer and Lake Shore Limited provide regular train service to destinations such as Boston, Washington DC, Albany, Canada and even Chicago!
Airports
Westchester’s proximity to NY City’s three major airports (LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark) in addition to it’s own County airport at White Plains, gives residents unparalleled access to domestic and international flights. With LaGuardia and White Plains airport covering mostly domestic flights and Newark and JFK offering both domestic and international flights with all major airlines, the world is literally at your feet.
Moving to a new location can be bewildering, especially so if you are moving to a different country for the first time. There is much for you to stay on top of and for you to get used to. This can be as simple as figuring out which supermarket best fits your tastes, to the more hands on, such as getting used to driving on the other side of the road.
I can fully sympathize with anyone facing these challenges as I made such a move myself, relocating to New York from Ireland with my husband and four very young kids. As I think back about my experience of that move, what would have been invaluable to us would have been a sympathetic and knowledgeable contact on the ground.
Someone who not only knows the neighborhoods and communities intimately, but also the more mundane, yet necessary, details of life, like commuting, driving, or registering with your local doctor. Below I have set out some practical steps on registering for a social security number, getting a driver’s license and registering for school in Westchester districts. But if there is anything else you think I can advise you on, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].
